Welcome to the Japan Scavenger Hunt
This is a working public draft of a resource that will eventually take on a more refined implementation. In its current form, it is more easily browsed on a PC or tablet. The final version will be optimized for mobile, but for now this is how it's going to be. I am aware that the navigation and function are not ideal currently, but these will be addressed after the content is more fully developed.
This is an experimental site put together by David R Munson as a means to aid exploration of different locations in Japan by providing different things to look for. When we pay attention and look for some things, we naturally notice others along the way, which enriches our experience.
This is not meant to be a scavenger hunt in the sense that you come away with anything physical. In fact, please don't take anything with you. Absolutely document what you find, through notes and/or photographs, though!
NB: Please don't take pictures of people without their permission. It's a jerk move.
In addition to it being an interesting endeavor to go around looking for these various things, you can also use the different entries on the list as part of an approach to navigation. There are lots of vending machines around, for example, and you could create the rule that whenever you encounter one, you have to make the next right turn. Or stop and make a sketch in your sketchbook every time you cross paths with a neighborhood cat.
As of early 2025, the list and this site are put together entirely by me, David. I'm happy for others to contribute, however. If you have additions to suggest, interesting observations, photos or drawing you'd like to have added to the site, please email me at davidrmunson@gmail.com
I can't guarantee I'll use what you send me, but all contributions that are used will be properly credited, of course!
This site is built using Obsidian and published using the Digital Garden Plugin.
Depending on how this little side project goes, it may be integrated into my Japan-centric site, Somewhere in Japan, at a later date.
